To a casual observer, there might not me a huge difference between Gerber automatic knives and spring assisted knives. Both knives offer out-the-front and out-the-side models, and both of them have blades that seem to automatically snap into place, but there is a major difference between them, and it is in how the blades are actually deployed.

Gerber automatic knives (sometimes called switchblades) are defined by the button or other mechanism that is located on the handle. The blade is deployed (or retracted in double action knives) with the simple press of this button. It is very simple and very convenient. Spring assisted knives, on the other hand, have a little stub on the actual blade. A user will have to push on this until the spring action can kick in and do the rest of the work. Both of these knives offer a quick release mechanism, but you should always be aware of the laws and regulations on them in your area.
