It used to be the only way to learn an instrument, find someone in your home town that played said instrument and was willing to teach you. In terms of the piano this usually meant going to some womens house after school for 30-60 minutes once a week to learn some basic chords, scales and songs you really didn’t want to know how to play. Fast forward ahead to today and you can take piano lessons still from that same old ladies home after school as well as music schools, stores and even teach yourself with a piano lessons dvd or self study online lessons. The need for private lessons is dwindling, and while I doubt it will disappear any time soon as our schedules get busier these teach yourself options will become more popular.
